Drosophila Virtual Lab

Drosophila, an online lab simulation, by Virtual Courseware for Inquiry-based Science Education, http: Labs demonstrating Mendelian genetics are illuminating for students but pose potential complications. Typical hands-on, in-person experimental models involve plants which grow slowly or fruit flies which require strict time-frames for particular steps — something nearly impossible for high school or a commuter undergraduate campus.

The advent of virtual labs allows students to struggle through mating strategies in order to draw conclusions about modes of inheritance by simulating actual matings without having to organize their real-life schedules around isolating Drosophila virgins. Students must do subsequent additional crosses and analyze offspring to deduce the mode of inheritance.

National Science Education Standards – Earth Science Water circulates through the crust, oceans, and atmosphere in what is known as the “water cycle.” Water is a solvent.

A study of biology includes the study of the chemical basis of living organisms, DNA. Other related sciences include microbiology and organic chemistry. The word science comes from a Latin word scientica, which means knowledge, or information. Science is a process of systematically gathering detailed information and gaining exact knowledge. We do not know all the “life” information secrets but we are learning more every day. The three biological life cycle s, are; Zygotic meiosis, Sporic meiosis, and Gametic meiosis, Amoeba – one basic life form.

Amoebas and there are many different kinds feed by phagocytosis the engulfing and ingesting of foreign particles or waste matter by phagocytes –they flow around their prey usually a smaller cell and engulf it. Organism that eat other organisms are usually called “consumers”. The amoeba’s cell membrane then fuses with itself, trapping the prey in a “food vacuole” where it will be digested. In the first place, no slight inconvenience results from too great separation beween branches of study which serve for the perfection of one art.

Virtual River River Discharge: Measure of river discharge questions: Got both questions right on how to best describe discharge. On page 4 of 25, guessed wrong because I didn’t notice they flipped the picture so the flow was going on the opposite direction. Hydrologists use wading rods to measure the velocity of a river. The stream velocity is fastest when it’s closer to the surface. To find the average stream velocity, I recorded and calculated 2 trials of velocities at different depth levels and graphed the results.

It was an upward sloping arc. Then I calculated the the depth of the river and used the sixth tenth rule to find out where the average velocity should be measured. The I calculated the width of the river and used all the info to calculate the discharge. New terminology such as cutbank, and riffle. I got to page 22 of 25 and the calculations wouldn’t come out and couldn’t figure out what to do.

Based the data on both the stream depth and the relative depth and neither came out to be right, so I couldn’t get past page I went back a few pages and started everything over and successfully finished page

Quantum Optical Communication Graduates of MIT’s electrical engineering and computer science department work in diverse industries and conduct research in a broad range of areas. They improve the stability and security of computers and communications networks, and they increase the efficiency of solar panels. They create unique algorithms to analyze financial markets and design robots capable of thinking like human beings.

Our community members continually make breakthroughs that enable people to communicate more easily, manage their environments more effectively, and lead more comfortable lives than ever before. MIT has awarded electrical engineering degrees for nearly years, and our educational programs have been at the cutting edge since their inception. We provide an in-depth education in engineering principles built on mathematics, computation, and the physical and life sciences, and encourage our students to apply what they learn through projects, internships, and research.

We succeed in our mission to produce graduates capable of taking leadership positions in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science and beyond. More than 30 percent of MIT’s undergraduates are enrolled in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and our graduate programs are world-renowned.
