Full Strong Pouch Aroma: Rich, smoky and leathery, this tobacco is touted as ‘the finest smoking mixture in the world’ by Dunhill. I don’t know about that, but between the Latakia and Orientals in it I can sniff my jar for a while before I get around to lighting up. It has a dark sweetness from the brown Cavendishes and lighter Macedonian, and a woody, leathery smell from the some of the choicest Latakia I have ever experienced. This is a finely-cut tobacco consisting of medium to short ribbons varying evenly in color from golden-brown to black with some birdseye stems with an interesting woody texture. The cut of makes it easy to drizzle pinches into my Jobey ‘Asti’ Canadian for filling, yet it doesn’t seem to clog the airhole or pack too tightly. Drawing through the unlit pipe yields a nice leathery flavor – this is another tobacco that I’ll sometimes put in a pipe for dinner in a non-smoking environment as I can ‘use’ the pipe unlit and get a nice flavor.

Spelling-Custom-Bilt, Custombilt, and other variations-is extremely important to the various aspects of the following discussions.

Medium Unnoticeable I am loving the broken flake appearance of this tobacco and the tin note sort of vinegary and sweet at the same time if that makes any sense , but it is failing to impress. You cannot smoke this tobacco straight out of the tin it is rather moist and it sort of sticks to your fingers. Because of this, I thought it was probably cased or topped with something, but I cannot detect any other flavours apart from the Virginia and the Kentucky.
It has some flowery scent or sweetness to it. I don’t think this is due to any added cavendish but because of the Virginia itself. After rubbing, it seems to pack quite nicely in your bowl and does not seem to smoke hot at any rate. Also, I can detect some tongue bite if you puff hard. The experience you might have with this tobacco might differ to mine though if you don’t let it dry properly, so be advised. In the nicotine department I’d say it is rather mild whereas the room note is not very pronounced or noticeable.
There is something which is setting this VaPer apart from other VaPers, but I am finding it quite hard to put my finger on it. I guess the Kentuky content in it gives it a somewhat cigaretteish quality to it, but this is not bothering me anyway. The Virginia in this blend has a mild piquant characteristic, but not in a bad way. Now and again, I get a hint of some Gawith Hoggarth’s ropes or pigtails, but this is not very pronounced.
It has a very interesting shape. Being at the bottom of the learning curve on identification of pipe shapes and restoration, any help in accurate description of the shape of this pipe would be highly appreciated!!!! The pipe has thin as compared to the thick rustication on the Custom-Bilt that I had previously worked on wavy and haphazard rustication starting from the bottom of the bowl and extending upwards to the rim.
These wavy, haphazard upward sweeping rustications give the impressions of flickering flames of fire. These flaming rustications at the back of the bowl reach nearly the outer edge of the rim from either side of the bowl and progressively lower down towards the front of the bowl.
I have a price structure I go buy in regards to newer estates say like a Winslow E grade. That pipe retails for approx My last Winsow E I bought last month on ebay, I paid That to me is a good deal. Now when dealing with older British pipes like a Dunhill or Chartan, that formula doesn’t work. For those kind of pipes, I look at the pipe and ask my self what is it worth to you, I put a number on it and never go above it.

Mr Newcombe rightly praises the tolerance of Danish society for pipe-smoking and many other things , but notes that high taxes are a problem, as the lowest level of personal taxation is fifty percent, and the national VAT value added tax is nearly twenty-five percent. The low-born apparatchiki who have everywhere usurped rule, have no qualms about perpetrating this and similar enormities. Character Counts is a forthright, effective, and pertinent duologue between Mr Newcombe and the craftsman.
I was particularly interested in his examination of a topic that is usually avoided by other commentators: I grew up in a society that was then-a-days obsessed with cleanliness. Boiling water and powerful disinfectants were liberally applied to everything before use, and this was often carried to what foreigners viewed as somewhat absurd extremes.

He says the calculation that balances safety regulations against population numbers treats rural residents as “collateral damage. You know that as well as I do,” he said. This loophole in the law, a legacy of the industry’s influence in Washington, has been evident for decades, but the mighty Marcellus gas strike in Pennsylvania has changed the rules. The new wells, using the technique of hydraulic fracturing, generate tremendous torrents of gas that need big pipes, running at pressures far greater than traditional gathering lines.
That has federal regulators and some members of Congress once again pushing to extend safety rules to the , miles of gathering lines in rural America – with gas and pipeline companies pitted against them. This high-stakes battle – now playing out in Harrisburg, as well – has engaged politicians, environmentalists, and legions of lobbyists, arguing over arcane details in law offices, committee rooms, and before the state Public Utility Commission.
As Pennsylvania takes its place among the major gas-producing states, it is perhaps appropriate that a key figure in these regulatory debates is a congressman from Pennsylvania – Bill Shuster. When Republicans gained control of the House in the elections, Shuster became chairman of a subcommittee with oversight of pipelines. He’s hesitant to add rules that might slow natural gas development – including ones on gathering pipelines.

Guide Alfred Dunhill began to manufacture briar smoking pipes in ; the famous white spot first appeared on top of the hand-cut vulcanite mouthpiece in in order that the customer should know which part faced upwards. At about this same time a one year guarantee against defects was offered on the bowl of each pipe, and to insure against far older Dunhill pipes being replaced under this guarantee a simple dating code, showing the year of manufacture, was devised and stamped onto each pipe bowl.
This code is still in use today. Over the ensuing years great interest has arisen over the “mystique” of the Dunhill pipe in general and the dating code in particular. Pipe collectors, especially in America, pride themselves on having acquired Dunhill pipes in prime condition which were made in the ‘s, ‘s and ‘s. Some collectors strive to acquire only those Dunhill pipes made between when Dunhill stopped buying bowls turned in France in favor of those turned in London at the newly opened Dunhill bowl-turning facility and the year of Alfred Dunhill’s retirement.
Consequently, much confusion has arisen over the dating code because it has not been standardized over the years, and seemingly minor differences in the code can mean a difference of years, even decades, in the manufacture of the pipe. Adding to this is the fact that the firm has used a great many special stampings depending on what part of the world to which their pipes were destined, and that sometimes these stampings or codes were used for only three or four months duration.
Leading to even greater confusion is that many pipes were simply stamped incorrectly; at times one part or another of the code is not to be found on a given pipe. Taking all this into account it should not be surprising that the original and complete dating code list, in possession of the firm’s archivist at 30 Duke Street, is some twenty eight pages long.
And even if this list was made available it would be of little use to any but the most expert because it can only be used in conjunction with the most precise knowledge of the Dunhill pipe as it has changed in appearance over the years.

Disassemble pipe and dispose of sludge. Immediately dry any drips from stummel and stem exterior. Clean the stem draft, tenon, and slot. Clean the shank draft. Air dry the disassembled pipe for 8 to 24 hours before smoking. For my heavily used pipes, ones I smoke three times a week, I usually clean them with the retort once a year. The pipes I use once a week get retort cleaning every other year.
My less used pipes get a cleaning without the use of the retort. Cleaning the Top of the Pipe To clean the top of a smooth pipe use saliva on a clean rag and rub.
